Formalwear is the least forgiving thing a cleaner handles. Beading and sequins are often glued rather than sewn, tulle distorts under heat, and silk marks where water touches it. Each gown is assessed panel by panel and hand-treated where machine cleaning would do damage.
The two stains that ruin a gown are the ones you cannot see yet: champagne and sugar. Both are invisible at first and both oxidise into brown patches months later. The hem is the other priority — grass, dirt and drink from the dance floor collect there and set hard.
